In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and V.S. Naipaul’s The Mystic Masseur, the concept of modernism is established through two supporting characters, both of which have only brief physical interactions with our protagonists. Kurtz, from Heart of Darkness, and Mr. Stewart, from The Mystic Masseur, both represent the idea of modernism through both their beliefs and their actions, in a time when modernism was finding its footprints and was viewed differently to those foreign to the movement. Although these novels take place in very different locations, they take place during a similar time period; the early 20th century. The modernist movement â€Å"flourished between 1900 and 1930† and emphasized the idea of deviating from the norm, including the rejection of religious principles, artistic freedom, and looking beneath the surface of man to find where our creative energy comes from, to reinvent how it can be utilized. Both Kurtz and Mr. Stewart may have been deemed as outsiders in their respective stories, but we begin to see their modernistic values and how they come to affect their respective novels over the course of time. Unearthing the meaning behind “the matrix” Free Essays

What will you do if one day you wake up plugged into a computer, and that computer gives you a reality that is far from what you know? Will it change anything? Will it give less sense of the things that you thought are real? The Matrix is a dazzling depiction of the adventure of a computer programmer as he seeks to find answers to his mind’s multitude of questions. The Matrix was first shown on March 1999. It is a futuristic film which predicted that in the near future, humans’ lives will revolve around Matrix, a simulated reality. Neo doubtfully obeyed Morpheus and after he took the pill, he is unconsciously taken to a strange place wherein his body is connected to a wide array of wires. He woke up to an artificial program that nurses human beings by sustaining them with manufactured and trashed realities. He is rescued by a group of escapees by removing him from the pod that he’s attached with. The group saved Neo, for they believe that he is the one destined who will save the humankind from their doom. In the latter part, Neo found out that he’s in the year 2199 wherein a current rage between humans and intelligent machines is happening. Neo came to a realization that the world that he has inhabited in 1999 is just an illusion. It was made and developed by certain intelligent machines to keep the human population peaceful. Thus, it gave birth to the name Matrix. Morpheus and his team are lucky enough for they are free. Their duty is to remove other humans from their attachment to the Matrix and in return give them inhumane abilities. They believe that Neo is â€Å"the One† who will end the war because of his infinite control over the Matrix. To completely become a member of the group, Neo is trained to possess several self-defense disciplines which primarily include martial arts. Alongside with this, he’s also informed of the dangers that entail the Matrix life.   All the injuries that he will acquire in the Matrix will manifest in his physical body in the real world. As the time progressed, Neo gradually tagged along with the team’s operations. The group entered Matrix wherein Neo met the Oracle. She told Neo that he possessed a gift for being â€Å"the One† but that he is waiting for something. After this, the group was ambushed by Agents, the fast programs whose aim is to eradicate any threats to the simulation. Unfortunately, Morpheus is the only one who was captured by the Agents. All the members of Neo’s group died except him, Tank, Trinity and Morpheus. It turned out that they were betrayed by their own member, Cypher. A lot of things still happened but one of the most gripping scenes is when Neo is captured by the Agents and he was shot dead by one of them. Neo should’ve been dead if not for Trinity who kissed him. Long before that occurrence, Trinity was already warned that she would fall in love with â€Å"the One†. It’s hard for her to accept Neo’s sudden death so she kissed Neo. To her surprise, Neo’s heart starts beating again. The Agents tried to shoot him but Neo just raised his pal and stopped their bullets in the mid-air.   And finally, Neo saw the Matrix- an infinite number of streaming green lines. Hence, he became â€Å"The One†. The Matrix is indeed one of the most compelling examples that can illustrate some of the facets of the cultural anthropology. Anthropology, as defined â€Å"is the study of humankind, both ancient and contemporary.† (www2.cedarcrest.edu) Anthropology also examines the various facets of the society without any biases. Thus, it envisages society without putting any kind of stereotypes. The Matrix contains a lot of implications that which in return are just manifestations of humankind. The film somehow portrayed that humankind is currently driven by a lot of implicit yet unnoticeable things. Some might think that The Matrix is just a great and dazzling action movie but if you’ll really scratch beneath the surface, you’ll discover that a lot of realities about humankind are hidden in the film.   Innumerable people have watched this movie, but only few really understood the superb analogy that covers the film. Cultural anthropology is indeed vast as it curtains a lot of cultures from different sides of the world. However, The Matrix was able to come up with a coherent comprehension of what is happening in the cultures right now. Cultures now including its people are living in an illusory world that’s full of deceits, slavedom, economic turmoil, fear, media stereotypes and material indulgence. What humankinds fail to realize is that a real Matrix also exists within their cultures. They are driven by the wrong things that they gradually forget to value the things that really matter. Because of their struggle to be wealthy and powerful, their task to nurture and enrich their culture is disregarded. The Matrix gives the image of an existence that’s full of superficiality and trivialities. The image shows that people do everything to block an upsetting reality by wallowing themselves with material pretensions. It is quite intoxicating for some cultures that are drenched in wealth while the other cultures are wallowing in misery. The Matrix can also be connected to cultural anthropological perspectives as it neatly depicts the demarcation that the cultures have right now. The film evidently showed the conflict that’s present between Neo’s side and the Agents. It showed that cultures, despite some of their similarities with other cultures will still remain to be poles apart. It is primarily because these cultures live up to diverse ideals and beliefs. The Matrix is undeniably a worth watching film because it’s not just an ordinary action movie full of explosions, special effects, and adrenalins.   It is a movie that truly makes sense as it will help the people to reflect and realize what’s really going on. The film might also show them how to modify their distorted principles about their cultures. A film like this is quite moving because it offers the possible things that might happen to humankind in the future if the continuous clashing of culturally-acclaimed principles will continue. There are different types of accountants though, and this essay looks at what roles these are in particular, looking at how they are similar and how they differ from each other. The difference between the roles of a present accountant will also be explored briefly, comparing to older roles of an accountant towards the end of the essay. All the various roles will be brought together towards the conclusion. The role of the accountant is one that belongs to the business environment. There are two main types of accounting – management accounting (internal) and financial accounting (external). A management accountant role deals with recording and analysing financial records for the companies for which they work. These records are then taken into account with business decisions. These decisions relate to the manufacturing and to the selling of the companies’ goods and services. According to Wood and Sangster, management accountants are likely to maintain a budget system that helps managers plan and control activities. The budgets are prepared frequently, for example monthly (2008, p655). These budgets can also help motivate workers and meet objectives of the business. Financial accounting is all the other roles that management accountants don’t do. These are for external users and have to provide annual statements, unlike management accounting. One example of financial accounting is Government accountants. These accountants work in the public sector and their role is to maintain and examine the records of government agencies. Accountants who are employed by the government guarantee that their revenues and expenditures are made in accordance with laws and regulations. Another example of financial accounting is public accountants. This is the most common accountant and they have many roles including auditing and tax. Public accountants only have roles in the public sector. They make sure that pubic organisations are managed effectively and efficiently and to make the best use of public money. Public accountants tend to add value to their role when they are employed be someone, in order to make their own in a sense profit. Not all financial accountant roles are set on making profit. Some accountants are employed by charities for example to help organise their budget and cash flow, so they maintain a good level of cash coming into the charity so that it doesn’t make a loss and fall as a charity. This is also the same for accountants employed by clubs, for example football clubs. Depending on whether an accountant is certified or not can effect what the role of an accountant can do. A public accountant is different to a certified public accountant because they have earned a license that shows that they have achieved a high level of experience, skill and training. This may mean that a certified public accountant has more chance of a larger role and more accounts to do because they have proven that they have had more training. Different users need accountants to help them. Owners of the business and shareholders are the most important users. Accountants would be requested by them to maybe to show the financial statements in an understanding and reliable way which can be shown to current and future shareholders. Accountants can also show the banks and creditors how a business is doing and the relevant information that they request easily. This can be useful for the business if they want to take out a loan for example. Managers also rely a lot on what accountants do because they need to look at the state of the financial records so they know how to manage their business. The managers can easily compare the annually statements to influence what their next decisions are. Suppliers also need the aid of accountants to help know what business’ financial positions are, for example if a business is going to exist next year and whether or not to invest in a long term contract with them. Tax authorities need accountants too to help calculate the amount of tax businesses owe to them. Financial advisers rely on accountants to show them the accountants of businesses that will be decent to invest in their shares. Accounting has always been around to record business transactions for many years. Bookkeeping was made to standardise the procedure of accounting and gave people a method to account. The role of an accountant years ago was just to record invoices and receipts that were used to calculate business’ profit simply. This then changed when businesses employed another person to take care of the accounts, due to business’ sizes expanding. Now there is an Institute of Chartered Accountants that leads the accounting profession with the many different roles an accountant can take. The role of the accountant has also changed due to technology advances throughout the years. Computers now can have special software packages that can summarize transactions, and save time and manual work for accountants. This means that accountants now need to be skilled enough to work with the changing technology advances and be able to specialise in the programmes – not just the knowledge of bookkeeping. On the other hand, there is of course the disadvantage of fraud still, which is easier with the increase of technology. Having computers help accountants has led to a new area of accounting called forensic accounting. Their role is to investigate and analyse financial evidence, and develop computer applications to help with the analysis of the evidence. Forensic accountants can even assist in legal actions as a witness. The role of an accountant can be related to issues today such as the credit crunch. The ‘Big 4 accountants’ (Pricewaterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Deloitte and Ernst Young) had to provide an independent assessment of the unknown (then) debt banks had held were worth. This showed that the role of an accountant is important to the worldwide economy because the accountants had to assess the global financial situation and try to come up with a way the economy could get through the recession. The role of the accountants chosen for this was on a much bigger scale than a normal role because it was dealing with multiple banks and a number of financial records at once. Due, also, to the credit crunch was the demand for accountants to help rebuild the economy. This meant that the opportunities for accountants increase so the role of an accountant can become quite vague, as there were many roles an accountant could take to help. One main objective to rebuilding the economy was to increase the confidence level of consumers so for example an accountant could help individuals manage their budgets if they were unemployed – there are endless tasks an accountant could take. This essay showed that the profession of an accountant is reasonably diverse, there are so many roles one could take and many positions inside those roles to suit everyone. The role has changed slightly because of advances in technology but taking that into consideration, it has made the role better and more efficient, with more time for an accountant to make sure that the books are correct. Question: Discuss about the Enforcing Infrastructure Technology Standards by IVK. Answer: Introduction: Standardization and simplification of the complexity of information systems infrastructure have become the primary focal point for most of the developing business units. IVK which is a midsize firm dealing in financial services is not left out on the proliferation task of its ICT environment. The past observation shows that IVK consumes 80 percent of its ICT budget maintaining the existing infrastructure while the remaining 20 percent for other services (Austin, Nolan ODonnell, 2009). This has raised problems in the department making them come up with the three actions that would be deemed fit to streamline the ICT standards within the department. The actions that were proposed to aid in enforcing the infrastructure technology standards include strict enforcement, gradual migration, and voluntary compliance. In all the three proposals I would recommend the organization to affect the use of gradual migration of the IT infrastructure. This is based on Austine et al. arguments on their research where they outlined the following; one, the departments are running different platforms of technology of their own choice without aligning to a specific standard, two, the organization should have one integrated system that is standard, the existing ones may be outdated or even declining in the market, three, there would be some element of flexibility if this methodology is implemented as compared to the other two methodologies (Austin, Nolan ODonnell, 2016). The flexibility in the evolvement would allow for integration of the sub-systems that would yield into a perfect standard infrastructure. Even though it is the best method, it is normally associated with some additional cost of purchasing new emerging systems that may take substantial amount of money and time for the gradual process to come int o completion (Lawler, Worley Creelman, 2011). Guy and Arnold in their study on The Diffusion of Information Technology, they argue that when deciding on which technology to use for a standard system, the CEO should consult with the IT technical team before arriving at any conclusion (Guy Arnold, 1995). The results obtained are discussed among the executive in the management which of course is composed of the technical experts. They then decide on the best platform and technology suitable for their infrastructure. This is then implemented and communicated formally and taken as a policy within the organization. Unlike in IVK where the ICT CEO has very little knowhow on IT systems infrastructure, this department should always be headed by professionals in the IT field who understands all the emerging, standard and the old technologies. This would make work much easier and simpler while streamlining the infrastructure (Guy Arnold, 1995). Currently, the technology used at IVK is not standard. It is not very convenient being that ea ch department runs on their technology of preference. This makes the maintenance cost to be higher than the reproduction cost of which should equivalent to the ratio in a normal scenario. The technology is therefore not good regarding infrastructure and standardization. The three proposals would change the state but with a variance in the level of effectiveness. Voluntary compliance would advantage the managers as they will learn from the difficulties that the IT staff undergo but may not estimate the level of its critics, that is, the various business units may not comply with the changes and thus, nothing will happen (Lu Ramamurthy, 2011). Strict enforcement is very effective but would lead to more investment and removal of non-productive systems. It would change the state of the infrastructure as the business units will have to leave their systems of preference and adapt to the standardized technology. Regarding the state of IVK, standardization and innovation are not in conflict because they are being implemented at the same time and both of the tasks can be handled effectively by the IT technical team. A problem would only arise for instance, if the IT team at IVK were given a software or hardware systems that they cannot support while implementing the newly innovated infrastructure (Tallon, 2008). There is a relationship between innovation and standardization in any organization. The two affects one another depending on the time in which one is implemented. Standardization should follow innovation, and this is depicted with what is taking place at IVK. The organization being a financial services institution should make good use of innovation and technology dynamically to achieve its goals. The business is competitive and very critical in thus proper systems and technology should be adopted. The advancement in technology would actually of a great deal to the organization. By sleeping and getting more rest, you’re allowing your body to recover from the mental stimulation you go through on a daily basis. Surprisingly, you’ll learn better and retain more information by resting. While cramming the night before might help some students, it’s not the best strategy. Eat healthy meals. And I’m not talking about a Chewy bar for breakfast on the morning of the test. Many jobs require future employees to have a college degree before they will even consider the applicant. Colleges and universities can be very demanding and rough for any individual to attend, and people with any handicap can find themselves in a situation that is almost impossible to finish. Deaf students that wish to follow their dream of achieving a college degree find themselves in a tough situation, not only by the demands of college life, but also because of the lack of help they receive from these facilities. Deaf students that pursue higher education should have easier access to higher educational opportunities, allowing them to obtain better control over their futures. College degrees are not easily achieved by most individuals. The success of the person has many outside influences, such as, social standing, educational level when the person enters college, and help from the college itself. â€Å"Approximately 70% of the 123,000 deaf students enrolled in 2,300 colleges across the United States will not persist until graduation† (Smith, 2005, p 1). The cause of this high rate must be considered by many different facts as well as different disciplines. Is the educational level of deaf students lacking in some way that causes them not to be ready for school after secondary schools? Are the colleges / universities helping in everyway so these students can achieve their goals? Does society treat these students less significant that hearing students? To fully understand this multifaceted issue, more than one discipline needs to be looked at because one discipline will not lead to a resolution, thus an interdisciplinary interpretation must be used (Repko, 2005). Many disciplines could help explain the cause for so many deaf students not reaching college graduation. Biology could explain set backs deaf children face, such as, were they born deaf or did they lose their hearing at an early age that cause these children difficulties in development. History could be looked at for how deaf people where treated in the past, and see if the stereotypes and stigmas that were present back then still existence today. Psychology should be used to help understand the deaf students and their goals for their life. Sociology looks at how deaf people are treated in the society they live in. Education could help explain if deaf student graduate high school with the knowledge they should have learned throughout their primary education years or if the student fell behind and still continued on to high school graduation. Education, sociology, and psychology will have more of an impact on the planning that will help more deaf students achieve their goal of reaching college graduation. Education is the process that brings together the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of a child to help that individual develop intellectual (Nath Cohen, 2005). Sociology is the study of various groups and subgroups in a society in a society (Macionis, 2006). This discipline helps illustrate the difficulties deaf students face in the United States and will also show the view that society has about deaf people that they interact with everyday. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and how people behave in everyday situations (Nairne, 2006). This discipline could help understand the mind of the deaf student and the hardships they face daily. These three disciplines will bring many different views about why deaf students do not reach a college diploma. To fully understand the viewpoints and theories that are in each of these disciplines, a detailed review of literature from each of these disciplines will be examined and introduced to help fully understand this difficult issue. In order to help deaf student attain a college education, a system must be implemented that helps with the full range of problems that deaf students face. Deaf students not only face difficulties in education but other areas in their life that hold them back; so, these issues must be studied also. With the conclusions from education, sociology, and psychology a plan can be mapped out from grade school to college graduation that help deaf students succeed throughout all of their educational careers. Background Many deaf people do not see themselves as broken or that they need to be fixed. The opposite is closer to the truth. Deaf people see themselves as a subculture, a minority in society. They feel that American Sign Language is their first language and English is their second language, just the same way Hispanics view Spanish (Unknown, 2007). This is quite a different view point that many hearing people may have when they see a deaf person in their community. Most deaf people do not feel the need to be â€Å"cured’ from deafness and embrace their deafness as their cultural identity. This must be kept in mind when studying this issue because both, the hearing population and the deaf population, have vast differences to why this problem might be happening. Keeping this point in mind we need to look at several reasons for this dilemma. Deaf students receive the same high school diploma that hearing students do, so why does the deaf population have higher rate of dropouts than the hearing population? The typical eighteen year old deaf student reads below a fourth-grade reading level (Bollag, 2006). These students are being taught to read lips and with cued speech (hand movements around the mouth to indicate the sound of the word being spoken) and not in American Sign Language (ASL). Teaching them to read lips and with cued speech is great to develop their English skills but these students also need the access to their â€Å"native† language in order to grabs the world around them. â€Å"ASL exposes children to the world’s knowledge and it incorporates self-esteem and aspects of deaf culture. Mastering English gives them access to the richness of the English world, like Shakespeare and idioms† (Bollag, 2006). These children seem less likely to accomplish the same school work as hearing students their age, if they must first learn to read lips or cued speech, which could take years after they start school. This could be another step in implementing a way to help every deaf student succeed after they complete primary school. Accessibility to the subject content many also play a role. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 1990, deaf people have the right for qualified interpreter for their classes (U.S. Department of Labor, 1990). This needs a more in-depth look to see if all deaf college students are receiving this service. Qualified is loosely translated and could mean very different things to different organizations. Sign language interpreters have different levels of qualifications from state to state; therefore one state might be more lenient than others. This is a key to any deaf student’s educations and has many negative effect if the interpreter is not highly qualified. The other question about interpreters is; do they understand the course content of the classes the deaf student is enrolled in? When deaf students are taking the basic core classes most interpreters can clearly understand and convey the message of the professors. After the core curricular, more in-depth discipline classes of the major the deaf student has chosen. If the deaf student decides to major in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, will the interpreter be able to fully understand the material and transmit that for the deaf student? This could be a very straing on both the interpret and the deaf student, which in turn could cause the deaf student to become frustrated with the course and drop out because they do not full understand. Are colleges deaf friendly? Some colleges have various programs and clubs for the student population. If only a few select deaf people are attending one univeristy the chances that they have special programs or clubs for these students are slim. Thus the deaf person may feel that they do not belong in the college world. People are social creatures and need the feeling of belonging, if deaf people do not feel this and on the extreme side feel exclused they may not want to continue their education. Another set back maybe how society views the deaf individual. Aristotle thought that hearing was the key to learning and deaf individuals that were not capable of speaking thoughts were thought to be dumb, with this the phase â€Å"deaf and dumb† arose (Hummel, 1993). This however is not the case; a minute encounter with an average deaf person will definitely disprove this theory. The sad truth is that many people today believe that this is true, and will hold on to this stereotype simply because they do not know any deaf people. There is a long history of remarkable deaf people that are not recognized by many hearing people. If this theory is false why do so many deaf people not graduate college? Society makes assumptions about every group and thus the group is stereotyped into something that, in most cases, is not true. Is this the reason why so many fail at higher education, because they have already labeled as less intelligent? The issues listed above show the star players in the education process for the deaf students. The cognitive ability of the deaf student must first be discovered. The educators in primary schools must be observed and taught the proper way to education deaf students. Then the college/universities must be examined to insure that the deaf student rights and needs are being met. Society also plays a key role into the education of deaf students; thus the stereotypes they hold need to be broken down to guarantee that the deaf students can succeed in today’s educational system. If these steps are taking the deaf student should be better able to seize their goal of graduating college. This problem needs not only to be looked at by many disciplines but with many different point of views. With this problem a debate with hearing and deaf arises, what is best for deaf individuals? Should hearing people decide what is best for the deaf child or should these decisions come from adults with hearing loss that have understanding about the deaf child experiences? If this dilemma is only looked at by one strict discipline or one point of view it could go unidentified by other professions and other individuals (Repko, 2005). Deaf students with dreams of higher education need an organization that helps with every aspect of they encounter throughout their educational careers. This organization needs to be design with the deaf student’s needs and also help educate deaf students of the government assistance/programs required under federal laws. This predicament affects many deaf students and has vastly impactions on their life. Without an education deaf people find jobs not necessary careers. This â€Å"real world problem† should be considered more broadly than one discipline can cover (Repko, 2005). In order to complete this task education, sociology, and psychology need to be explored. Education should be researched first to find better ways to help deaf students at younger ages to better prepare them for their future. Sociology should then be studied to see where the deaf students fit into society. The stereotypes of deaf people need to also be considered to inspect what needs to be altered in order for the deaf students, not to be look down on as less intelligent individuals. Psychology is the final stage of the approach because the deaf student also needs to be analyzed, in order to completely understand the full interpretation of the problem at hand.
